'Valley cover' goes across between the cylinder heads, under the inlet manifold.
+1 with Paul H's advice to move across to the V8 register forum!

I think I've seen that in various places on a lot of Leyland cars including my '81 Metro, and my '72 GT which had it in exactly the same place(s).
It strikes me as being remarkably similar to blue-tak (which is what I use as a substitute on the Metro)!

The first thing you want to be checking for is scoring on the crank and cam journals - 'cos if you've got any it'll need remedial treatment, regardless of what any measurements are.
