Re: Electronic Ignition, yes or no?

I have been using electronic ignition in MGBs since about 1980 when I bought a Mobelec Magnum. In recent years I changed to Powerspark a) so I could get rid of the finned grey box and b) because I thought it wouldn't last for ever. Just in case I have a spare distributor with points already gapped s...

Re: Running on suddenly.

I recognise that your running on has arisen following a change to your ignition system and therefore people are correct to focus on that. My car has been prone to run on in he past. One of the things I have found is that idle speed can effect the chance of it running on. If it idles at 650rpm or 700...

1/2 inch socket with 1/4 inch drive

Like many other people I have modified my gearbox cross member so that I can fit the mounts to the gearbox first and them fit the cross member. One of the things you have to do is drill 2 access holes through the cross member. When doing this I drilled the smallest holes I could get away with and th...

Front suspension and brake rebuild

I have taken the front cross member off my B and stripped down the brakes and suspension. The last time I had the callipers apart is over 20 years ago. I had forgotten you should remove the pads and pump the brakes while the callipers are still fitted so as to bring the pistons out. Interestingly, I...

Re: Homemade Fog / Spot Light Rocker Switch

Fascinating project. I guess it would not matter too much if the fog light stayed on when the spot light came on.

Re: Exhaust manifold nuts

It is the one sold by Moss but I have the one that comes with a matching tubular manifold. I like the flange joints. They make taking it apart for other jobs very easy. The system feels very strong and the modern style mountings are probably an improvement. It was a bit noisier than I expected. Howe...

Re: Overheating

"the gauge starts to rise, and the fan cuts in,"

I may have missed more details on the thread, but can I just say that the above statement is not overheating. It is the cooling system operating as intended. Provided the fan then keeps the situation under control there is no problem.

Re: Exhaust manifold nuts

Since my post yesterday I have found that Spalding Fasteners have just what I was looking for. Theirs are 3/4 inch thick.

Exhaust manifold nuts

When taking the engine and gearbox out to change the speedo drive worm gear in the back of the overdrive, I found there was an exhaust manifold gasket leak. My car has a Tourist Trophy tubular stainless manifold and system. I am careful not to tighten brass nuts too tight in case they strip and this...

Re: Gear box mounting bushes

I had forgotten about the plate on the left engine mount. When I used to compete in sprint and hill climb I removed that lump of metal to save weight!

It must be under the bench somewhere and it would fit in my powder coating oven.
