Re: Aerial on wing

Impressive chapter and verse, Michael! If you have time, I'd be interested to see the rest of the Guide. Do you know what year it's from?

I rather love this sort of original detail.

Re: Dragging disc brakes

Just a quick update: Pistons exercised further (no sign of any rust). Finished with brake cleaner; no grease. Rust removed from disk rims with 60grit. 1/32” taken off the thicker N/S pad to equalize with partner. Rubber backings on both and small amount of copper grease. They no longer bind but are ...

Re: Dragging disc brakes

I know, it seems obvious! But they worked fine for 6 months before starting to bind up. So I want to investigate whether there's another explanation. Apart from anything else, the pads have great stopping ability and weren't cheap. The only snag is that they squeal badly so the shims (or some sort o...

Re: Dragging disc brakes

Well, I've exercised the pistons in and out having applied red rubber grease and brake fluid (separately). But the problem is still there. The pads bind up with the shims fitted, and they seem fine without them. The pistons are bright and shiny with no rust anywhere, and the callipers were new last ...

Re: Dragging disc brakes

Hi Paul

I got the anti-squeal shims from Rimmer Bros. "Brake Pad Shim Kit Anti-Squeal GBP242SHIM". These are the aluminium sort. But as a belt and braces approach I was also using stick-on Mintex pads beneath them.

Re: Dragging disc brakes

I've experimented with taking the backings off the pads and that does stop them binding. So it would appear to be the thickness rather than the shape that's the issue. The pistons can be retracted right back with a rewind tool. But in actual use they always have a mm or two protruding from the calli...

Re: Dragging disc brakes

Well, the pads are the same thickness as standard ones. It's the shims needed to stop them squealing that add an extra mm or two. Investigations will continue!

Re: Dragging disc brakes

Many thanks for all the suggestions. Well, some progress... I have a hydraulic brake switch so I tried exercising the pistons with a smear of red rubber grease, they being a newish pair. But there was no improvement. It then occurred to me that I'd recently fitted new metal shims to the back of the ...

Dragging disc brakes

My front brakes are binding up and dragging , causing the discs to get very hot. And probably not doing much for the car's performance either. This seems to be the case on both sides, so may perhaps be due to lack of use during the lockdown. Could I have your advice on the best way to free them up p...
