Re: Ballast resistor removal

Good news Philip.

Very interesting, the route of the resistance wire!

Re: Starter Motors for MGB's with Ballast Resistor Ignition.

That figures Vic. On the Bentley 1978 and later cars diagram it shows some weird wiring at the ignition coil/distributor bit incorporating a "distributor resistor". God knows how it all works. I wonder if a dud resistor here could account for my fluctuating voltage readings when cranking. If this re...

Re: Ballast resistor removal

Hi Philip, as you were posting, I was busy deleting my post, after I realised that you did have the ignition relay. Which wiring diagram are you using? I think you could run a wire fro No5 white/brown live side of the fuse box to the coil+. There is still the old 6 volt resistance wire to think abou...

Re: Ballast resistor removal

Deleted - twaddle.

Ignition relay seems to appear in 1978 according to Bentley wiring diagrams.

Re: Ignition switch relay type/size?

Philip, on my 1978 car, the 30 pin is actually marked 30/51. Just wondering if you have misread yours.

I suspect that any old 4 pin relay that has 85, 86, 87 and 30 or 30/51 pins would work.

Re: Starter Motors for MGB's with Ballast Resistor Ignition.

Thanks for that Vic, and good luck with the Landie job. I swapped over the 2 relays this aft, with no difference in operation or readings. You've pretty well confirmed my readings in the ignition switch run position, but we differ on the cranking position, which does point to something amiss at the ...

Re: Starter Motors for MGB's with Ballast Resistor Ignition.

Good idea Charles. I'll swap em over today, and report back.

Vic, you'll be wearing your spade out if you're not carefull ;)

Re: Starter Motors for MGB's with Ballast Resistor Ignition.

Hi Charles, thanks for your interest in this saga. The car was registered August 1978. There are 2 inline fuses in the vicinity of the 2 relays if that helps. On my car, the 2 green and white wires are joined in a single connector at the coil which I don't want to disturb if possible, but yes, to cu...

Re: Starter Motors for MGB's with Ballast Resistor Ignition.

Did some checking with the self proclaimed expert. Both relays had the earth and trigger connections reversed, but putting them right hasn't made any difference. All the connections checked and appear to go to/come from the correct points. Still shows 10.5 volts in the run position. So, I think the ...

Thanks for the relay wiring guide Vic.

I must admit, I love these esoteric mystery problems, and love solving them even more!
