Changing brake discs

Post by Not_Anumber »

Im looking to remove my brake discs to clean and then refit. Is there a need to measure the end float and potentially add shims each time the discs are removed and replaced as the Haynes manual seems to suggest ? The car hasnt covered many miles since the discs were changed by the last owner

Despite 40+ years of tinkering with a variety of cars having to dismantle the wheel bearing to remove the discs is new to me.

I think if you are replacing the same disc on the same axle there should be no need to change any shims. However, if I was doing this job I would take the opportunity to check the end float and make sure it was within spec.

Thanks Ian. Its hardly done any miles since the PO had the front suspension overhauled so shouldnt have any play but I will check to be careful.

As you need to remove the hub to remove the disc you will need to reset the end float when the hub is refitted. If it is just to clean the discs up you might be able to do what is necessary without removing them completely.
