MGB Roadster budget restoration & conversion

Post by RumpledinkieVintageWorkshop »

Hi all, just joined the forum, I started a new project a couple of months back, thought it might be interesting to try and carry out a budget restoration on a 1979 MGB Roadster, keeping the costs as low as possible. We all know how easy it is to spend a fortune restoring a MGB once you get started. So I am challenging myself to restore the car to a reasonable level and not break the bank. Also converting it to chrome bumpers.
Anyway this is my progress so far.

I found what I was looking for, another home restoration with many repair panes fabricated with simple home made tools; https://www.mgexp.com/forum/mgb-and-gt- ... t.3513512/

Hi and welcome. You are taking a very refreshing approach and it's great you have recorded the work on YouTube videos.

My 1980 Roadster cost me about £3.5k all in to restore to a basically rust free and mechanically perfect condition. I did everything myself including the respray and bought stuff second hand as and when it came up at a good price.

Your MGB looks good, I think doing the work yourself is the only way to have a financially viable restoration of a MGB.

In this episode of the MGB Roadster budget restoration, we remove the rear quarter panel and replace it with a good second hand panel, does it go according to the plan?

How are you thinking of sourcing your bumpers? This might seem a bit out-of-step with your budget approach, but might work out cheaper. I very highly recommend Harrington stainless steel bumpers instead of chrome. New chrome bumper quality is poor, and re-chroming old ones is expensive. The quality of the Harringtons is exquisite - people seeing them assume they're chrome. And the service is courteous and quick - they reached me in the UK from Viet Nam in under seven days. There's the bonus that if you should scratch them, being solid stainless, you have the option to polish it out. Good luck! https://groupharrington.com/product/mg-mgb-bumpers/

Experimenting with lowering the suspension on my 1979 MGB Roadster, check out the video to see how it went.
